Sh’lichei Tzibbur (Shatz) Course

The Sh’lichat Tzibbur (f.) or Shaliach Tzibbur (m.) is the person who leads the congregation (tzibbur) in prayers, and someone trained to do so can also work as an effective gabbai.

Our shatz-gabbai course, will teach participants to lead all aspects of a service – including reading from the Torah, and delivering a sermon, so that they can be effective part time service leaders and gabbaim.

Participants will learn about the essential elements of the Progressive Jewish prayer service, and the contents of the siddur. This is a practical course of closely-guided self learning with several ‘checkpoint’ days throughout the year.

Graduates of the course will form a cohort of gabbaim who are responsible for the smooth running of shabbat morning services, and will be eligible for an Adult B’Mitzvah in January 2026.

10 lessons of 90 minutes on the Sundays there is a Shabbat service
